The Terry Fox Run

This past Thursday was the Terry Fox run at my school. For those who don't know, Terry Fox is a Canadian hero. In 1980, he started a Marathon of Hope in the great province of Newfoundland, with the intention of running all the way across Canada. All this, with one good leg and one amputated leg, in an effort to raise awareness and money for cancer survivors like him.  He finished his run in Ontario, when the cancer came back, this time in his lungs. He eventually lost his fight against cancer. You can read more about him by clicking on his picture below.

So, every September in Canada, we remember and honour Terry Fox through the Terry Fox run and donations to his fund. I work in a fairly small school, so last year we raised about $3000. This year, we are hoping for $4000 and if we reach it, the High School students get to slushie the teachers. It's all in fun and gives kids an incentive to reach their goal. Here are some of my runners.
And here are some of them, in action...
All for a great cause.

Bubblegum Patterns

We've been working on patterns in my class this week. And I have to say, my kids are just naturally getting the hang of it. Lucky for me. They are so into it, in fact, that they end up finding circles on the back of their snack wrapper and then they rush up to show me that, it is a pattern also. Love that excitement! First graders are so easily excitable, I actually wish I could be a bit more like that.  I am trying to think of something that excites me to that same level, and I would have to say, it's probably coffee. Starbucks coffee. I need to get out more.

So here is one of the anchor charts I made for patterns.

The little bubblegum machines at the bottom are something I made to try and make it more fun.

And then we did this worksheet to go with the bubblegum.
You can click anywhere on all that bubblegum to download.
Have a great weekend!

Pete the Cat Activity...again

I am in love with this cat! He is so popular with my kids.
They are humming I love my red shoes, I love my red shoes...under their breath when they are working. He has just been the best influence on them. Partly my fault cause when they do something they aren't supposed to, I say - Now, is that what Pete would do?! And then they get all sheepish. But, hey, it's working and I am not one to change what's working. So, we just finished reading this Pete story and listening to the CD too. I had my kids work on this cut and paste activity. They have to match each of Pete's activities to the right picture.
It ended up being a great activity that they loved. And so my love affair with Pete continues. Next week, we are moving on to the next book - Pete and his 4 Groovy Buttons, I just ordered it from Amazon. I know I'm gonna love it just as much. Just click on the pic above to download the activity.

Halloween Math Centers Freebie

Happy Sunday everyone! It has started to get a little bit colder, where I live. I like it hotter, but what's a girl to do? Move, I guess. The slightly colder weather has made me start thinking about Halloween and when I start thinking about Halloween, it makes me want to create a Unit to go with it. Once I create the unit, I will want to give it away. Once I give it away, I will want to make something else. Sound familiar Mouse fans? So....I just finished a Math Centers Unit for my TPT store. Here's a look at the preview.

I can't wait to start using it! If you would like it, I will give it away to the first 4 people who leave a comment and follow my store hereHave a great week!

Freebie Friday Pete the Cat

Today is a teacher workday for me, so I didn't have to wake up as early and it gave me time to post a freebie for Friday, which I haven't been able to do since school started. I think we are all pretty much in the same boat time wise, we have hardly any right now!!
In my 1st grade class, we have been reading Pete the Cat and loving him. Last week we read this book,
then, I wanted to see what kind of little sequencers I had, so I had them do this ordering sheet I made
It sequences the story and all your kids need to do is remember the order of colors for Pete's shoes. My kids loved doing it. Just click on the Pete sheet above to download. Happy Friday.

Race Car Packet Freebie

Happy Sunday everyone! My daughter is home from college this weekend, so the lump in my throat is on hiatus, in case you were wondering. She has lots of laundry, a bad cold and so much studying to do already - poor thing. But, I am doing what I do best - mothering:)
I wanted to say thank you, this weekend, to all of you who follow me. I just finished up a Race car packet to help my kids practice the tricky er, ir, ur spelling pattern. It's in my TPT store.

Dr. No and the September Currently

I promised, in my last blog post about Class Rules, that I would talk about consequences and Dr. NO. Trust me you have all met Dr. NO. So far, from what I can tell, I have at least one Dr. No in my class. He is, however, trying to gain followers. And I have explained to these potential followers that - Dr. No is not the boss of the class and they need to listen to me because I am, in fact, the boss of the class. So far, it's working.

But, Dr. No LOVES to say no to me. The other day, as we all gathered on the carpet, Dr. No refused
to sit criss cross applesauce and instead lay down on his stomach and would not move. Insert huge sigh here. I chose to ignore him, then proceeded to give him chances to sit properly. He refused. So, I just went on with the business of the day and eventually, he came around.

The only real problem I am having with Dr. No, at this point, is his undeniable cuteness and his need to be loved and accepted. When I think of all that, he just doesn't seem so bad anymore. I am now in full -get him to attach to me- mode. I'll keep you posted.

In the meantime, I'm linking up with Farley for the September Currently. Hope that you had a great, restful, Labor Day weekend.

Class Rules Freebie

I have been working on classroom rules F-O-R-E-V-E-R. Ok I am exaggerating. But, for a long time. And they are finally ready.  I needed to have them ready for last week because school started on Wednesday. And OH, how I had forgotten the difference between 1st grade in June and 1st grade in August/September. I am being severely reminded with each and every tug on my sleeve, leg, skirt, blouse, shirt, you name it. Whatever they can grab onto.  But, they are oh so cute. I can't even describe the cuteness! I was watching my kids work the other day and I thought to myself - Gosh, they were just babies 6 years ago. Babies! And now, here we are.

So...I have gone over these rules of mine so much the past 3 days, they are tattooed in my brain. Honestly, on Thursday, all we did was practice the rules, practise lining up for fire drills, practise what to do when the timer rings, what to do when the bell rings, what to do at home time. Like you, I am getting routines and procedures down. Maybe, you've already finished that or maybe you're just beginning. In either case, I want to share my classroom rules with you. Here they are...

If there is a rule you need and I haven't included it, please e-mail me at thegroovyteacher@gmail.com
and I will do my best to add it for you. You can click on any of the pictures above for the download.
I'll be back tomorrow for the truth or consequences and to tell you all about Dr. NO. Trust me, you have met Dr. NO before. Stay tuned.
