Super Connectors

I am always striving to be a good connector for my kids, to set the example first and show how it's done. And I always start the same way every year with the same books, The McDuff Series by Rosemary Wells. I love McDuff the dog, he reminds me of my dog for starters and so as soon as I make a connection to my own dog then I'm off and running with dog connection stories.  But my kids need a lot of help knowing what to connect to, so I use Super Connectors as a way to help pinpoint what we as readers (especially beginning readers) connect to. This will give you an idea of what it looks like.

Pete the Cat

I love Pete the Cat, he's my hero. And I think the reason that I like him so much is because he just so totally goes with the flow. Oh I got my white shoes dirty - doesn't matter that they're red now cause I love my red shoes too. I think if Pete the Cat were a person he'd be a great friend. If you invited him over for supper and promised him tuna, but then forgot to do your shopping and had to explain to him that all you had in the house was peanut butter, he'd be fine with it.  I love my peanut butter. And I can't believe that I only just discovered him lately, where has he been all this time?  To honour him, I made a word search for my kids, who I think love him as much as I do. The Last Days....

There is 1 day of school left - Yippee!! This week, on Monday, to be exact I started using Reagan's pack The Last Week of School  (I love it!) Tunstall's Teaching Tidbits. Anyway, the first morning which was the 5 days left of school we completed all the work in record time. The next morning we were beginning 4 days left of school and I was going over the work with my kids and I heard this little voice from my carpet (where we gather) say "I love this work."  And then another voice chimes in "Me too." And so it continued like that.  It was soooo nice to hear.  I love this packet for so many reasons, it is fun, it encourages independence and obviously it is the kind of work kids love to do.
My last day tomorrow, boiling hot in my classroom but it is a Field Day thank goodness.  I will so miss this class, I love them muchly.

First Grade Portfolios

5 days left...So, we are working on portfolios.  What I do is collect the writing that my kids do all year, all the way back to the first piece of writing they did when they started 1st grade and I gather it all together and have them choose the pieces of writing they are most proud of to include in their portfolios. The portfolio also includes reading logs and math achievement. Usually for the cover page I have some sort of artwork. This year though I decided to change it up a bit and after working on adjectives for a loooooong time, my kids were able to take the letters in their names and find a describing word for each letter. They did an amazing job and obviously they didn't always follow the adjective rule, but they were able to write something about themselves that gives the reader more info about the kind of person they are.  I LOVE the results. There are a few below to give you an idea.

Summer Olympics and 8 days left!

So, I've seriously put aside the summer Olympics in my classroom, partly because I just couldn't squeeze it in time wise and also cause there are only 8 days of school left!!!! (I wish I could not count tomorrow and say 7) and in the short time I have left I don't feel I can do the Olympics the justice it deserves. But, I have to do something. Below is my something.

My kids LOVE word searches so I made this one for them.  If it's something you can use in your classroom, feel free.  Just click on the picture to download.

I Love the Daily 5

I love the Daily 5, it changed how I was able to do things in my classroom.  Who knew that during the school day you could actually have a group of students around your table and listen to them read in silence!!  I love it! I have read and re-read the Daily 5 book.  Now when the Daily 5 is running well in my classroom, I have to say, I look forward to that time of day, when I just have a small group of kids with me and I can do Guided Reading with them - uninterrupted.  So...I wanted another way for my kids to remember what they needed to be doing at each activity, yes we had the I-Charts, but I wanted something else that would make remembering the task easier, so I came up with RIGHT.  Use RIGHT to remember. Here's what it looks like for Read to Self.

And when I say Time to read I mean essentially read the whole time, I just couldn't fit that in exactly.  But I tried to take the most important elements for each Daily 5 component and make it work with RIGHT.  And my kids love it. Now if someone is off task or unsure (especially when you begin in the fall) I just do a quick RIGHT reminder - "Are you Writing the RIGHT way?" And that's all it takes.  You can click below to download RIGHT for all 5 components of the Daily 5.
